USMLE

USMLE- What is USMLE? What is the elligibility criteria? How many steps we have to give? What is the fees? What is the syllabus? What books do we have to read?

USMLE- United States Medical Licensing examination. This exam is to do residency programme (P.G.) in United States. There are 4 steps of USMLE and there is no syllabus for it.
I. Step1- Consists of 7 subjects.
1. Anatomy- Read your notes+Kaplan notes+First Aid.
2. Biochemistry- Read your notes+Kaplan notes+First Aid.
3. Physiology- Same as above.
4. Patholgy- Same as above+memorize slides from any atlas (Preferably Robbins)
5. Micro- Read your notes+Kaplan notes+Makes microbiology ridiculously simple + First aid.
6. Behavioural Sciences- Don't know what to read+First aid.
7. Pharma- Your notes +Lippincott+Kaplan +First Aid.

Also do Kaplan Q book and Kaplan Q bank. They come with explanations.

To be elligible for USMLE your college must be present in FAIMER list and you should have passed all the basic sciences i.e. must be in your 4th year (If from CIS countries)
To pass you have to get 55-65%, not fixed, varies every year i.e. 75 percentile. No negative marking.

II. Step 2 CK(Clinical Knowledge)
5 main subjects:
1. Medicine- Davidson +your notes +Blue prints+Crush USMLE.
2. Surgery- Your notes + Blue prints +Crush USMLE.
3. Paeds- Same as above.
4. Obs and Gynae- Same as above.
5. Psychiatry- Same as above.

Do Kaplan Q bank and USMLE world questions as far as MCQs are concerned.
You are elligible to write this exam once you have passed 5th year of your medical school (If from CIS). Passing criteria same as step1.

III. Step2 CS (Clinical Skills).
Practical exam. You have to see 10-12 patients. You will be given there chief complaint, you have to take the relevant history, do relevant physical exam and then explain them the differential diagnosis and diagnostic options and finally you have to write a short note on all the stuff you did.
Nobody knows the passing criteria. Easiest of all USMLEs.
If you pass all these steps of USMLE you would be able to apply for a residency programme in USA. If you get into one you will get a J1 visa, which means you have to go back to your country once your residency is finished.
Also- You can write Step1, step2 CK in India. But for step2 CS you have to go to US essentially. You can apply for the visa on the basis of that. Moost likely you will get a B1/B2 visa.

Elligibility for CS- Degree and you must have passed step1.
Books for CS- First Aid for CS and USMLE world CS cases.

Fees: Spet 1: If you take exam in India it will be around 800 US dollars. If you take it in U.S. it will be around 685 US$.
Step2 CK: Same as step1.
Step 2 CS: 1200 US$.

Now the 4th step of USMLE i.e. UMLE step3.
2 day exam. Consists of 350 questions and 8-10 CCS cases.
Read first aid and CCS cases from USMLE world.
Elligibilty criteria: You must have degree and ECFMG certificate ( Which you can get if you have degree and you have passed first 3 steps of USMLE)
If you pass this step and get into a residency program you will get a H1B visa and you can apply for green card on that visa.
Fees: 600-700 dollars.

For information check www.ecfmg.org www.nbme.org
These elligibility criteria and fees was when i did these steps. I told you the books which I chose and had success.
Things may be changing now.

Also forgot to tell you. Step 1 is 8 hour exam with 350 questions and step 2 CK is 9 hour exam with similar amount of questions.
PLAB
PLAB: PLAB is required to be elligible to work in the U.K. Has 2 steps.
PLAB 1: you can write in India. It is equivalent to CK part of USMLE.
PLAB 2: You have to write in U.K. It is equivalent to CS part of USMLE.

You have to have degree before you are elligible to write PLAB.

Once you pass PLAB, you have to apply for jobs in the U.K. and the relevant visa (HSMC). It is very difficult to get job in the U.K. these days and hence to get that visa especially in surgical departments. Therefore doctors in the U.K. are heading towards different part of the worlds.
However, if you get a job then you have to write MRCP (if medicine) or MRCS (if surgery) and then you can become a consultant after few years of advance training.

Don't know more then that about PLAB

M.B.B.S. to MCI or PG abroad

Here I am attempting to give you detailed knowledge about all the books and study material you might need during your MBBS, MCI exam or exams abroad. This is just my opinion, the key to pass any exam is just your hard work and determination. This is just a small guide which might help you.

I. MBBS subjects:
1. Anatomy- Snell's book and Grant's atlas. If Snell's is too big you can also go for Mir publications.
2. Physiology- Chaudhry or Guyton.
3. Biochemistry- Kaplan notes.
4. Microbiology- Kaplan notes or Makes microbiology ridiculously simple.
5. Pharmacology- Lippincott and Kaplan notes.
6. Pathology- Robbins or Harsh Mohan and Kaplan notes.
7. Surgery- Manipal.
8. Medicine- Davidson or Kumar and Clarke.
9. Paediatrics- Blue prints.
10. Obs and Gynae- Blue prints(best) or Shaw's or ten teachers.
11. Opthalmo- Any book, preferably Khurana.
12. ENT- Any book.
13. PSM- SARP series(Preferably) or Park's.
14. Forensic- In my opinion don't waste your time unless you want to go in this field.
15. Anaesthesia- Don't waste your time unless you want to become an anaesthetist.
16. Radiology- Any.

I don't know if I am missing any other subject. In my opinion if you read that much you will do exceptionally well on any exam. Those who are within first 2-3 years of there medical college, once you read any chapter, make notes and keep on revising the notes, don't read the books again.

Genuine Problems:
1. We don't have time to read that much, as we have to study in Russian- Rubbish. Study hard you will get the time. Stop going out with your girl friend daily, stop wasting time in useless conversations.
2. I am in 5th year now and didn't study up until anything- Hmmm. Start studying now. And make a study group. Read as much as you can before you get the degree.
3. I read everything but I cannot recall or I forget- Revise it, revise it again. Discuss these topics in study group. Believe me you won't forget.

thanks for the people from whom i have collected the information

Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramdoss today said that the union government took a unilateral decision to recognize foreign degrees in medicine allowing Indian origin people to practice in India.

He further said it doesn't come under the purview of Indian Medical Council (IMA) and added that the decision would be informed to the IMA.

I don't know whether this news came out yesterday is right. It doesn't seem to have appeared in any other newspapers or webpages.

"Tuesday, March 18, 2008- Press Release- Government of India

RECOGNITION GIVEN TO MEDICAL QUALIFICATIONS GRANTED BY MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS OUTSIDE INDIA

The Union Government, exercising powers conferred upon it by the provisions of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, has recognized Post Graduate medical qualifications being awarded in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States of America, with the condition that these degrees should be recognized in the respective country for enrolment of medical practitioners in the concerned specialties. This recognition has been notified in the Official Gazette on 10th March 2008.

Background
The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) has been operationalized with the main aim of providing accessible and reliable primary healthcare facilities especially to the poor and the vulnerable sections of the population. However, the vast stretches of the countryside are not well equipped with health facilities, doctors and para medical staff, creating serious imbalances in the health sector. As per Medical Council of India (MCI), the total number of registered allopathic doctors in the country is 6,83,582. Thus, the allopathic doctor – population ratio works out to 1:1634. In addition, there are more than 6 lakh practitioners of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy in the country. Taking all these numbers together, the doctor – population ratio comes to 1:870.

There are 271 medical colleges in the country, out of which 138 are in the Government sector and remaining 133 in the private sector. The MBBS students intake capacity of these medical colleges is about 31,172 and the number of seats available in various Post Graduate medical courses is approximately 11,005 annually
It is clear from the above statistics that the country is in dire need of medical specialists to cater to the increasing demands of public healthcare in rural and urban areas. The various strategies adopted to overcome this problem includes augmenting the capacity of existing medical institutions and encouraging setting up of new medical colleges and introduction of new Post Graduate courses. As increasing the intake capacity and availability of medical specialists cannot be achieved immediately, the Union Government has now decided to give recognition to acclaimed Post Graduate medical degrees awarded in English speaking countries. This recognition would not only facilitate Indian students to pursue their Post Graduate medical studies in these foreign countries but will also make them eligible to practice medicine in specialized fields back in India. In addition, there are many Indian citizens who are living abroad, possessing these foreign Post Graduate medical degrees and are willing to return to India. Recognition of these degrees has now cleared the way for these Indian citizens to come back to India and pursue their medical profession. Non Resident Indians and Overseas Citizens of India in medical teaching profession can also come on sabbatical or as visiting faculty in medical colleges in India.

A copy of the notification issued by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare on this subject can be seen in the Annexure.

ANTI RESERVATION INDIANS..

ANTI RESERVATION INDIANS..
i think we all should stand up to fight against this system which will ruin our lives by putting this quota system. Do u all think this is the solution to eradicate the castism from india whilst this will just add fire to it? These politicians do not belong to anycast but only votes.U all are familiar with this. Then why we should allow to rule our lives by implementing the policies which are directly affecting their vote bank.
This is the time to unite against them and to show our power and unity so that they can’t take their own decisions.
they talk about constitution, why there is need to do implementations in it every now and then for their own benefits?
These politicians can show protest on roads, fire the cities, can kill innocent people, can keep criminals in their parties, but a quite protest against reservation by much more educated students and doctors (whom they say future of young India) was wrong and they were treated like hell.COME AND JOIN ME TO FIGHT FOR.
